The First National Bank of Newcastle, Wyoming

The First National Bank of Newcastle, Wyoming

The First National Bank of Newcastle, Wyoming was opened in 1904.  It was the only bank in Newcastle to nationalize and it was also the only national bank in Weston County.  The First National Bank of Newcastle is a classic large size only, small town bank.  It issued both 1902 red seals and 1902 blue seal national bank notes.  Its charter number is 7198.

There are currently four national bank notes known to exist from The First National Bank of Newcastle.  Two of the national banks are red seals and the other two are blue seals.  For the entire state of Wyoming there are only 17 1902 red seals, but there are 406 1902 blue seals.  However, despite that fact, a blue seal from The First National Bank of Newcastle sold for three times more than a red seal from the same bank.  The blue seal was much nicer condition, but both notes are equally rare on the bank, and red seals are a much better type.  That just goes to show that condition does matter and you can never predict the market.

The first president of The First National Bank of Newcastle was TA Cosgriff.  Thomas Andrew Cosgriff and his brother James Everett Cosgriff were journeymen ranchers, capitalist, and bankers.  Between the two of them they were, at any one time, president of at least five national banks in Wyoming.  The first cashier of the bank was JL Baird.  John L Baird was the cashier in 1904, but left the bank to serve a term in the Wyoming state government.  In his absence Walter Schoonmaker stepped up and became cashier until 1911.  During the time John L Baird was away, his son Jay C Baird was assistant cashier.  After Cosgriff and Schoonmaker left the bank, the father and son Baird team ran the bank until John left and Jay moved up to president.  The nicest bank note from Newcastle is pen signed by Jay C Baird and stamp signed by John L Baird.
