Serial Number One Series of 1882 National Bank Notes

Serial Number One Series of 1882 National Bank Notes

Series of 1882 national bank notes come in three types.  Serial number one notes are most commonly found on the first issue of the series called brown backs by collectors.

Serial number one brown backs were printed between 1882 and 1901.

Serial number one brown backs are most commonly found on the five dollar denomination.  In fact almost 300 serial number one five dollar brown backs are known to exist.  If damaged or impaired a serial number one 1882 note can bring as little as $800.  However, other generics erial number one 1882 brown backs start at around $2,500.  That value is just for a very generic number one in less than stellar condition.  Other more exciting number one notes can be worth a lot more.
