South Dakota National Bank Notes

        South Dakota issued national bank notes from 177 banks in 104 different towns.  South Dakota had fewer national bank notes than its northern sibling.  South Dakota national bank notes have a strong collector base and prices are generally respectable for most issues.  South Dakota did not become a state until 1889, which means any national bank notes printed before then are known as Dakota Territorial National Bank Notes.  These notes carry a significant premium over other national bank notes from South Dakota.  These territorial national bank notes were printed starting in 1872 when Yankton got a national bank.  Deadwood South Dakota also issued some very valuable national bank notes.  Currency printed after 1889 can certainly still be valuable.  There are plenty of South Dakota national bank notes printed in the 20th century that have the potential to be worth several thousand dollars.
